mix: absolution (songs for mr caruthers)
So I'm writing this story. It's 1912. There's a girl. She's a librarian. She slays vampires. I was pretty sure that was what the story was about. Until, of course, I actually started writing it. The girl's still telling the story, but the centre, the catalyst, has changed. In a lot of ways, the story is really about Rupert Caruthers, former teenage hoodlum of London's streets, who retreated into a quiet life of librarianship after dealing too deeply in black magics and opium and vampires, who was rescued from vampire thralldom by the government, who found himself bound in another kind of thralldom, using talents he doesn;t even think he should have in the government's employ, who buries his past in the foundations of a library and deliberately becomes as unassuming and harmless as possible, because he knows that if he doesn't watch himself, he is capable of horrible things that even he doesn't quite understand. Who spends several years being quietly and guiltily in love with his copper-haired assistant librarian, who also has a latent capacity for magics, and surely it is part of his penance (not atonement, he doesn't hope for that) never to let himself be in love with her (and anyway, he tells himself, he will probably kill her, somehow). Who becomes her teacher and companion when she tumbles, terrified and unwilling, into a life of slaying vampires. Who may or may not be a Tam Lin stand-in. Who, to my complete surprise, went from a one-off character of necessity into what may very well be the core of the story.

These are songs for Mr Caruthers, loud, fey, Victorianstreetpunk songs. There is also an unusual amount of singing saw (\o/). A companion, of sorts, to That Light.

1. E.S.P. | uiscedwr
instrumental

2. COAL | blackbird raum
i am flesh and you are pale
i am sleeping you are dead
we’re all playing cards as the ship goes down
we’re living as if we are not, hanging from a precipice
shuddering and lurching off the edge
but someday this will all be gone, as fast a match can be struck
take warning for the veil is very thin

3. DEAR DARKNESS | pj harvey
the words are tightening around my throat
and around the throat of the one i love

4. HEY SON | nancy elizabeth
hey son
it's a hard life

5. THE UNHOLY | rose kemp
call me young and foolish and reckless
because that's what i am

6. EVANGELINE | siren on
evangeline
do you know how beautiful you are
holding stars in your hands
as you silently let them go into the night

7. CROWN OF LOVE | arcade fire
if you still want me, please forgive me
the crown of love has fallen from me

your name is the only word that i can say

8. AN APPEAL TO ST PETER | pale young gentlemen
it's not a broken heart that i'm reeling from
i beg for absolution

and i try so hard to play the part

9. THE CLOCKWISE WITNESS | devotchka
in this moment of atonement
can you ever forgive me?
is there something hovering?
it seems to be governing
everything once dear to me

10. THICKETS | patrick wolf
oh what have i become?

11. KEEP ME ON | bodies of water
keep me on, hold me on the narrow way
and the sting of the nettle's barb allay
keep a hedge round me till the other side
deep and wide

12. THE WALTZ | dandelion junk queens
hold me close and you will see
just how much you mean to me

13. ALL THE THINGS | dark dark dark
if it all washed away
what would you hold onto of everything?
(oh, all the songs you've ever known
oh, all the stories ever told)

14. TAM LIN | mediaeval baebes
and at the end of seven years
we pay a tiend to hell
i am sae fair and fu' o' flesh
i'm feared it be myself

15. BROTHER OF SLEEP | soap&skin
i dreamed of you
every day
and every night

I can't wait to read the entire thing. The basic plot is fascinating.

Also, the mix looks fabulous, especially the art. I wish I had a fraction of your creativity.

I can't wait to write the whole thing. :/ (On the bright side, this is the deepest I've ever got into a novel at all. I actually have hope of finishing it someday. I actually have three quarters of a plot...!)

You, silly, are still the creator of several of my favourite mixes. ♥

Gah! It is not fair to have this unexpectedly show up on someone when her parents have just admonished her to go to bed because she still can't sleep like a normal person! Jo Jo Jo, I will take this in the morning, because I literally am off to bed. Also, em, you haven't moved from the address you gave me at Christmas, right? I am highly confused. Hopefully sleepy as well. *waves*

AHA IT IS IN FACT A YOU. ON THE INTERNET. PLACES BESIDES TWITTER. \o/

(It's okay, I can't sleep like a normal person either. And I don't even have the jet lag excuse. :/)

er, yes, my address is still the same. <_<

Also "Caruthers Boy" by Earlimart and "Song for Absolution" by Muse should be bonus songs. *nods* Mostly I say bonus songs because the feel of both doesn't quite fit with the rest of your songs, especially the Muse song, but its lyrics do fit well and mostly that's what I thought of the second I saw "Absolution" was your title. And the lyrics to "Caruthers Boy" apparently aren't on the internet anywhere, but I think from listening to it that it's got something to do with, like, a kid growing up and being rebellious? So it would totally fit.

Well, currently I don't "do" bonus songs because I'm not really sure what you do with bonus songs... when you've downloaded the mix, do you put the bonus songs in the playlist, too? But that makes the flow all wonky. Or do they get lost in the wilderness that is... well, my iTunes, anyway, and yours, and probably everybody else's is pretty wildernessy. HOWEVER, I totally love non-sound-appropriate character songs for writing inspiration and stuff, and who knows, they might even fit in a future mix, depending. Also, didn't you mention that you get story ideas from song lyrics? Because I totally do that too. :/ (Sometimes it's like, "THIS SONG IS SO PERFECT. Except for that one line, which doesn't make any sense... UNLESS I MAKE THEM DO THAT. AHA!"

Yeah, I have more than one mix (I think?) that has/will have one or more bonus songs, largely because the tone of the song or part of the words don't fit but so much of it is perfect enough that I want to include it. Not sure what most people do with bonus songs, but for me I suppose I'd just include them in my playlist...but, like, only upload them singly and not as part of the zip folder or something? It's probably kind of a dumb concept, especially since it's just my way of qualifying something that doesn't quite fit and being like "No, I know it doesn't fit! I'm not totally ignorant!"

But yeah. I definitely have got solid ideas from song lyrics at least once; listening to Shinedown's "Second Chance" on the radio made me go "Hey, this talks about the moon, I wonder if I could put it in my Moonstruck mix. Doesn't entirely fit though, what with talking about needing to leave home and all--EXCEPT WAIT, JEREMY SHOULD TOTALLY DISAPPEAR FOR LIKE A WEEK AFTER HE KILLS HIS WEREWOLF." Which was nice.

Do you have both of the songs I mentioned? I feel like you should since I gave you, I don't know, 1,000+ songs, although I really can't remember how much Muse I gave you. Also you should listen to Earlimart anyway, because it is win, as is Florence & the Machine, which is totally unrelated except it was on musicyardsale recently and also a couple of her songs are in my Moonstruck mix.

Also. I forgot what my other major song-inspiration was although there have probably been more: Snow Patrol's "Take Back the City" made me realize that despite the many ways in which it's awful, Daemin and Reina both really, really love the city of Thassen, which not only helps develop the city's character (so important with this kind of setting and with this story) but also helps explain why they keep getting drawn back there. Nice bit of characterization about the two of them really, too.

What it says about me that the two biggest brainstorm-through-song moments I've had have been for catchy but not overly special Top 40 songs, though, I have no idea. >_<

Um. Also. Do you have more Rose Kemp? Because "The Unholy" is pretty frakking awesome. And if you have Blackbird Raum's "Cities," I kind of need it...
the love song of j. aimee prufrocke: lovely | alice take me with youfaeriemaiden on September 2nd, 2009 04:19 pm (UTC)
I do not have "Cities"! It is sad, because I was considering that for the mix as well, I think.

I do, however, have the entire Rose Kemp album, Unholy Majesty. Which is indeed fantastic, and kind of... folk with metal influences? But without dragging in the bits of metal that I can't stand. Plus, Rose Kemp is the daughter of Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp, the lead singer and bassist of Steeleye Span, which makes me go n'aww!

YAY MUSIC

Also: ^-^

I was going to say I love torrents, but actually there don't seem to be any Blackbird Raum torrented (at least not that IsoHunt can find); this was from a rar of Purse Seine of Filestube. LOOK IT'S NOT MY FAULT THIS TIME, I COULDN'T EVEN FIND IT LEGALLY.

Now I just need to find the possibly nonexistent Eisley song "Apollo," because my inchoate BSG mix(es) need it. ...Oh, it's a cover. That they probably sang live, like, once. Well...drat. Although I guess that means I can dig up a copy by whoever actually sings it (Alphaville? Who the frak is that?).

Huh, torrenting was how I found the album I possess, I'm pretty sure. Unless I Googled for Rapidshare, which works rather well much of the time. Also, I have filled out about forty lame surveys and that horrid website hasn't taken me to my download yet. :/

Yeeeah, I really should give up on that site (despite having not actually used it much) because it's really annoying and also the other users and even the mods are pretty unfriendly, but...EASY MONEYS.

Anyway. Try here.
